As one of the most esteemed and longest-serving coaches in NCAA Division I history, Pete Hovland's influence on the swimming and diving program at 十大菠菜台子 is undeniable. From his early days as an athlete and student under the revolutionary methods of Ernest "Ernie" Maglischo, Hovland led with passion and left his imprint on the heart of the program. His coaching journey culminated in an impressive list of accolades and records, most notably an incredible streak of 44 consecutive men's conference championships and 29 consecutive women's conference championships.

When Hovland retired on May 7, 2023, he left behind a legacy of excellence and dedication. To honor his contributions, 十大菠菜台子 is launching a new initiative: to name the natatorium in his honor. This project aims to not only recognize Hovland's monumental impact but to ensure the growth and development of the program he so loves.

史蒂夫Waterfield, 十大菠菜台子 director of athletics, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. "Pete has unprecedented success with consecutive swimming and diving championships spanning more than four decades,沃特菲尔德说. "He has shepherded the program growth from Division II to present-day Division I success. Pete has a connection with people from the 80s all the way to 2023. This naming recognizes someone who truly gave more than half his life to this university, the athletics department and the swimming and diving program. It’s just such a fitting and appropriate recognition for him."

The initiative has a significant goal: to raise over $1 million. These funds will be endowed to support 十大菠菜台子’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs, thereby helping to continue the level of success that Hovland nurtured. The funds will be used for various programmatic needs, 比如营养, 设备, 团队旅游, 招聘, hiring additional full-time coaches, capital projects and summer school scholarships.

Beyond his professional achievements, Hovland's influence is deeply felt in the personal connections he's formed over his long career. He's coached multiple generations, becoming a trusted figure to students and their families. His personal philosophy goes beyond athletic success. He emphasizes the importance of discipline, 自我激励, academic achievement and community service.

"My biggest reward from coaching is the relationships," Hovland says. "My wife and I get to be involved in our student athletes’ lives after they are done swimming. There are a number of them; some have married other swimmers. A lot of their kids call us Uncle Pete and Aunt Laurie."

This initiative not only honors Pete Hovland's incredible career but promises a bright future for 十大菠菜台子's swimming and diving program. By continuing Hovland's legacy of excellence, the university hopes to uphold its reputation as one of the best swimming and diving programs in the state and nation.
